Katarineko vs jpdb: the list or the path

Both tools start from the same insight: learn the vocabulary of the thing you want to understand, not "Japanese vocabulary" in general. If you're choosing between them, the question is which belief about studying matches you.

What jpdb does well

jpdb gives you ready-made frequency decks for specific media (anime, visual novels, books) with its own spaced-repetition review. Pick your target. Get its word list ordered by frequency. Work through it. jpdb covers far more titles than we do, and for learners who enjoy raw SRS it is excellent.

Where we part ways

The list is where jpdb stops and where Katarineko starts. A frequency deck tells you that Spirited Away needs 214 words for 70% coverage. The studying itself is still flashcards: word, answer, grade yourself, next. For many learners that grind is what killed their last attempt.

Katarineko turns the same list into reading. Each week you get a story written from your film's vocabulary, pitched just above your measured level, with every phrase explained on hover. New words arrive inside sentences you can read, and much of the review happens through the reading itself.

Who should pick which

Pick jpdb if you want breadth (hundreds of anime and novels), or flashcard efficiency feels satisfying to you rather than draining. It also pairs naturally with heavy watching.

Pick Katarineko if the flashcard grind is what makes you quit and one of our films is a destination you care about. You read your way there instead of drilling. Our catalogue is small and film-first. That is a limitation today, and if your target is a 300-episode series, jpdb serves it better.

Using both is fine. Some learners run jpdb for breadth and Katarineko as the path to their current film. The tools disagree about method, not about the goal.
